Care/Washing Instructions: Hemp/Org. Cotton

This is always one of the first questions asked. So, we have put together some information to make it easier to find the answers everyone is looking for :). If you still have unanswered questions after reading this, post a reply and we will get back to you a.s.a.p!

Prepping Before First Use:
Wash 3-5 times with detergent, drying completely between washes. This releases all the natural oils in the fibers. The more you wash the more absorbant your hemp will be. It is recommended to prep hemp alone (not mixed with other diapers), because the natural oils may cause the other diapers to repel. After the prepping stage, it is ok to wash everything together. It is also possible to boil anything that is hemp and/or cotton (Prefolds, JoeyBunz, Nursing Pads) for 15-20 minutes, then launder with towels and dry completely. DO NOT BOIL the BUMBOO POCKET DIAPER!! It has PUL and it will deteriorate.

Storage (for used diapers):
Remove solids from diapers before storage. We recommend storing soiled diapers in a dry pail for up to two days.To combat smells, a few drops of Tea Tree or Lavendar essential oil on a cloth (or tab if you are using a pail liner), or a citrus circle http://www.citruscircles.com should do the trick.

Daily Washing:
For our hemp/org. cotton products we recommend washing every other day with a liquid detergent free of enzymes, perfumes, brighteners, dyes, and softeners. Liquid detergents are not as abrasive as powder. If you do use powder, its best to dissolve completely in warm water before adding to the washer. Pure soap detergents are not recommended either, as they leave a residue on the diapers (similar to soad scum). For a cmparison chart on which detergents are cloth diaper safe, click the link below.

Our washing routine is as follows:
Cold PreWash, Cold soak and cycle with detergent and baking soda, Hot cycle with detergent, double Cold rinse. You may wish to do a double rinse adding 1/4 cup of vinegar to the first rinse. Line drying in the sun is best, it fades stains and keeps smells down, or tumble dry on medium.
If your hemp becomes 'stinky' try an overnight soak with baking soda and vinegar, followed by your regular wash routine. For more suggestions follow this link to our product care instructions page: http://www.babykicks.com/productInfo/care.cfm

P.S. If your diapers are not coming out as soft as you would like, add a little Ecover Fabric Softener every now and then. It works wonders!
